How to Prepare for Your Website Project

Your step-by-step guide to a smooth and stress-free design process

Why Prep Matters

A well-prepared website project runs faster, feels easier, and delivers better results. This guide will help you gather everything you need so we can design a site that looks amazing and works hard for your business.

1. Clarify Your Website Goals

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want my website to achieve? (e.g., bookings, sales, brand awareness)

  • Who is my ideal visitor? (describe them in detail)

  • What action do I want them to take? (contact, buy, follow, sign up)

Write this down — it guides every decision we’ll make together.

2. Gather Your Website Content

Start pulling together:

  • Logo files (preferably PNG or SVG with transparent background)

  • Brand colours & fonts (If you don’t have a style guide, I can help!)

  • High-quality photos (headshots, products, office, etc, or I can help with stock photos)

  • Copy for your pages:

    • Homepage

    • About

    • Services or Products

    • Contact

    • Blog (optional)

Tip: If writing isn’t your thing, ask about our website copywriting guide or done-for-you options.

3. Plan Your Visual Style

Start collecting inspiration:

  • Websites you love (share 2–3 examples)

  • Pinterest board or moodboard with colours, fonts, and layouts you like

  • Words that describe your style (e.g., bold, elegant, minimal, earthy)

This helps me understand your vision quickly and clearly.

4. Create a Simple Sitemap

List the pages you want:

  • Homepage

  • About

  • Services

  • Contact

  • Portfolio/testimonials/blog/shop/etc.

Don’t worry if it’s not perfect — I’ll use specific software to refine what you have then you will have the opportunity to review and refine.

5. Set Up Key Accounts

You’ll need a few logins ready before (or during) the project:

  • Domain provider

  • Email marketing platform (Mailchimp, Flodesk, etc.)

  • Scheduling tool (if you take bookings)

  • Google account (for Google Analytics or Search Console)

Tip: If you don’t have these yet, I’ll guide you through it or set up the ids/accounts with your approval.

6. Book Your Design Slot & Get Excited

Once you’ve signed your contract and paid your deposit (if one is required, depending on the plan you’ve chosen),

  • You’ll get access to your shared drive.

  • I’ll send your project timeline

  • And we’ll kick off with a discovery call or onboarding form

Pro Tip: The more prepared you are, the smoother (and quicker) your project will go.

Bonus: What Not to Worry About

You don’t need to know design terms
You don’t need everything 100% perfect
You don’t need to stress about tech — that’s what I’m here for!
